Ostomy Care

A stoma is caused by digestive or urinary system diseases and requires surgical treatment to separate the intestinal tract. One end of the intestinal tract is led out to the body surface (the anus or urethra moves to the abdominal wall) to form an opening.

Stony can achieve intestinal decompression, reduce obstruction, protect the anastomosis or damage of distal intestinal tract, promote the recovery of intestinal and urinary tract diseases, and even save the patient's life.

The stoma is generally aimed at rectal and bladder diseases (such as rectal cancer, bladder cancer, intestinal obstruction, etc.). In order to save the patient's life, doctors remove the parts of the lesions by surgery. For example, rectal cancer will remove the rectum and anal canal, and bladder cancer cancer will remove the bladder, and then open an opening on the left or right side of the patient's abdomen. Stool or urine is involuntarily expelled from the body through the stoma, and these patients will need to stick a bag at the stoma to store the expelled material after discharge.

Medically, this type of patient is referred to as a "stoma person". The body shape of "stoma people" has changed, and their excrement cannot be controlled at will. This has caused difficulties for patients in social, dietary, odor management, use of ostomy bags, and other issues. Some people even feel pessimistic and disappointed in life, and lose confidence in their future. Therefore, as a special group in society, ostomy patients need the care of their families, social assistance, rehabilitation guidance, and more importantly, people's understanding and social recognition and support.

World ostomy Day is a commemorative day aimed at strengthening communication and exchange between ostomy professionals and workers worldwide, and promoting ostomy knowledge education to the whole society. This commemorative day has been held every three years since 1996, and is scheduled on the first Saturday of October each time.
